Adam Weishaupt
Adam Weishaupt was born on February 6, 1748; however, his early life was marked by tragedy as he lost his father at the tender age of five. Subsequently, Baron Johann Adam von Ickstatt (1702–1776), who was his mentor, facilitated his education by sending him to the Jesuit College of Ingolstadt in 1755. It was here that Weishaupt’s natural talents began to shine, as he quickly established himself as a brilliant and promising student. From a young age, Weishaupt demonstrated a strong affinity for classical literature. Nonetheless, it is important to note that his appreciation for these works, especially those of Cicero, was significantly influenced by the Jesuit teachings. As he grew older, however, he would come to reject these interpretations. Furthermore, at the age of fifteen, Weishaupt embarked on a rigorous academic journey, focusing on jurisprudence, political science, history, and philosophy. Importantly, Ickstatt, who served as both professor and director of the University of Ingolstadt, granted him access to books that had been prohibited by theological censorship. This remarkable opportunity allowed Weishaupt to explore the ideas of French Enlightenment philosophers, ultimately shaping his intellectual trajectory.
